May 2008
As we bring this year to a close, I would like to reflect on the many accomplishments our NJHS students have accomplished over the past school year.
- We supported the annual can food drive during the Christmas holiday and provided a Thanksgiving meal to a needy family.
- We implemented the SCPI, “Student Clothing and Personal Items” pantry. SCPI is a permanent program designed to assist students in the community with clothing and personal items such as toiletries and school supplies.
- We set up a National Junior Honor Society link on the middle school website. Next year, we hope to add minutes from our monthly meetings as well as photos throughout the year. Parents, you can also check the website for Honor Society meeting dates.
- Students completed at least 10 hours of community service throughout the year.
- We implemented the “Show Some Character” program for the student body. This program emphasizes positive character traits throughout the year. Each 9 weeks, 3 character traits were emphasized. For example; Three traits are “trust”, “friendship”, and “hard work.” When students were observed promoting any of these 3 traits they received a tick mark. At the end of the 9 weeks tick marks were tallied and 3 students from each grade were designated winners. The winners participated in a fun convocation with the teachers, but more importantly they received a “move to the front of the lunch line coupon” which allows them to cut in front of other students for 1 week!
These activities have provided students with a good perspective of the National Junior Honor Society institution; character, leadership, service, and scholarship. I would like to thank everyone for their efforts this past year and wish all of the eighth grade students success as they move on to high school!

NJHS Activities
The NJHS is sponsoring a character building activity called “SHOW SOME CHARACTER” that will begin the second nine weeks and continue until the end of the school year. The program is being promoted in an effort to make students aware of positive character traits.
- NJHS will promote the annual canned food drive which supports the canned food bank at the Gasburg Baptist Church.
- Students will begin a new community service project in 2008. NJHS will collect donations for gently-used student clothing, student personal items, and school supplies.
- In the winter months, NJHS students will shovel snow from sidewalks as a community service.
- NJHS students volunteer time to work the middle school concession stand during the winter months .
Annual Selection Process
There are many steps required before a student can be selected into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). Student academic records are evaluated at the end of the first semester. A student must receive an average 3.0 GPA in order to become eligible for membership in the NJHS. This is the first step of the selection process. Students will go through a lengthy evaluation process. Selection is based upon scholastic achievement, leadership, service, and character. Not all students will be selected.
Students that are selected to become members into the NJHS will be invited to attend an induction ceremony which is held in April or May.
