Special Education

About Us

The Monroe-Gregg School District operates a comprehensive special education program for students, ages three (3) through twenty-two (22). All programs are operated in accourdance with Indiana Article 7 which governs the provision of special education; MGSD provides services that encompass a continuum of services. These services range from consultation to learning center to self-contain classrooms, depending on the individual needs of the students identified as having a disability. In special instances, students may attend a program out of district if we cannot meet their needs within the district.

Eligibility for special education is determined through an evaluation process. The evaluation is initiated by either school personnel or the parent. Once a request is made, members of a Multidisciplinary Team meet and discuss the child's needs. Two recommendations come out of that meeting, a plan is written (Response to Instruction) to address concerns, data is kept, and then in 9-12 weeks the team meets again or the student is immediately recommended for testing. If a student is recommended for immediate testing, the testing must take place within fifty (50) school days. Response to Instruction can be a three-tiered process and if the child makes no progress, a referral is made for testing. This testing must take place within twenty (20) school days. If a child makes improvement, staff should continue the plan.

If a student is tested, a CCC (Case Conference Committee) will meet and discuss options for assistance and create an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) for the student. The committee is required to meet annually on or before the anniversary date.
