Our PTO

About us

MES PTO is made up of dedicated parent volunteers. A seven member executive board volunteers to coordinate and guide PTO programs and funds throughout the year. Working closely with the school's administration and parent driven committees, the executive board maintains a focus on maximizing students' experiences and balancing families needs and abilities to contribute support.

Every family and teacher at Monrovia Elementary is a member of the MES PTO. Your support is what makes a difference! There are many opportunites for volunteering during and after school hours. Volunteering on a one time special event basis or on a reoccurring basis is a great way to become involved with your child's education.

MES PTO meets the first Monday of the month at 6:30 pm in the elementary cafeteria. We hope all teachers and parents/guardians will join us.

Backpack Safety

MES PTO would like to thank Riley Hospital for Children for providing us the following information.

Backpack Safety Information

Pack it light. Wear it right.

Backpack Tips for students and parents:

1.  Make sure the backpack is the right size for your child. Choose a lightweight backpack that doesn't add much weight to your child's load.

2.  The backpack needs to have two wide, padded straps that rest comfortably on your child's shoulders.  Both straps should ALWAYS be worn when carrying the backpack.

3.  Adjust the shoulder straps so the backpack fits snugly to your child's back.  The bottom of the backpack should rest at the curve of the lower back.

4.  Buy a backpack with a waist belt, which helps distribute the weight of your child's load.  Encourage your child to wear the waist belt.

5.  Your child should NEVER carry a backpack that weighs more than 15% of his/her body weight.  This means that a child that weighs 100 lbs. should not carry a loaded backpack heavier than 15 lbs. (ex: 100 lbs x 0.15 = 15 lbs)

6.  Lay the heaviest items in the backpack first so they will be closest to your child's back.

7.  Arrange books and supplies so they don't move around in the backpack.

8.  Check your child's backpack to make sure the items he/she is carrying are absolutely necessary.

9.  When the backpack is too heavy, your child should hand carry a book, lunchbox or other items to lighten the load.

10.  If the backpack is too heavy, consider buying your child a book bag on wheels if the school allows it.

Other PTO Projects

The PTO has several ongoing projects that help raise money for charity or for school programs that support our students. We appreciate their efforts and any assistance you may lend to these projects.

  • Campbell's Labels for Education - Mrs. Bennett's Pre-K class will collect the Campbell's labels to benefit supplies needed to support their program
  • Pop Tabs for Riley

These items may be dropped off in the collection baskets inside the front lobby as well as in the hallway by the cafeteria. Keep using your Target, Marsh and Meijer cards. We receive money from them if you have designated us as your school.

Pop Tabs

We are collecting pop tabs from aluminum cans. The tabs are collected and sent to Duke Energy who then sells the tabs for scrap. Duke Energy then matches the dollar amount earned from the pop tabs and matches it. The money is then donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis. Monrovia Elementary has collected over 2 million pop tabs in the past few years. Please help us support the efforts of Riley Hospital by donating your pop tabs. Mrs. Davidson is our pop tab coordinator and liaison with Duke Energy.

Marsh Fresh Ideas for Education

If you shop at Marsh, every time you use your fresh idea card, our school earns points. We can use those points to purchase school equipment! To sign up, you can complete the Shopper Sign-Up Sheet that was attached to the Paw Prints newsletter, sign up online at http://www.marsh.net/srb_education.html or visit the Customer Service Counter at your Marsh store. The Monrovia school number is 28620.
