Clubs and ActivitiesMath BowlInformation sent home: January 8; 1 st meeting: January 14Math Bowl is an academic team for 4th and 5th graders. The team is composed of four captains and up to 16 team members. The students work in groups of 3 to solve story problems given a time limit of 30, 45 or 60 seconds. There is one competition consisting of four rounds. Each round consists of seven multiple-choice questions, which are read to the students and projected on a screen simultaneously. The competition is based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics publication Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics. This includes thirteen curriculum standards. Prior to the competition, student will meet twice weekly to work on problem solving, team strategies, and familiarizing themselves with the calculators. There is no limit to the number of students who are members of the MES Math Bowl Team. Spell BowlInformation sent home: September 4; 1 st meeting: September 10 Spell Bowl is an academic competition for 4th and 5th grade students. It is sponsored statewide by the Indiana Academic Competition for Excellence. Our team will practice a list of 750 words provided for use in this year’s competition by IACE. Students will meet twice a week after school during September, October and November to prepare for the competition in November. Eight spellers will then compete for points by spelling seven words each for one round. Our total points will then be compared to similarly sized and leveled schools in our area, then posted statewide. Drama ClubInformation sent home: September 24; 1 st meeting: October 8 Drama Club is offered to 4th and 5th graders. It will be a Musical Theater Workshop. Students will meet after school until 4:00 pm. They will learn a Musical Theater vocabulary and have a performance experience. The musical will be presented on November 9. Student CouncilInformation sent home: Sept. 7; Election: Sept. 13; 1st meeting: Sept. 204th and 5th grade students may become members of Student Council. Student Council members are selected by their peers to represent their school. Two students from each class are chosen. Throughout the year, members host special events with proceeds benefiting different charities, give morning announcements, display flag, and are a voice for the students. Members will have monthly meetings. These selected members must have all A’s or B’s or C’s and display excellent behavior. Adventures in NutritionInformation sent home: September 5; 1st Meeting: September 12 The objective of this club is to promote good nutrition in everyday life. This is a 5th grade club which meets on the second Wednesday of every month from 2:45 - 3:45. The club will be involved in learning about and creating healthy and fun snacks. Peer MediationSelections made: August 24 ; 1st meeting: September 64th and 5th grade students are hand selected to become peer mediators. These 6 students that are selected will receive extensive training through West Central Educational Center in peer mediation. These mediators will work together with the students in conflict to resolve the problem. Garden ClubInformation sent home: September 12; 1st meeting: September 19 Are you a fan of the outdoors? Maybe you see plants as a vital part of Earth. Do you think about how plants provide nourishment for people and animals? Perhaps you are one who enjoys the beauty and shade of many trees as well as their protection from winter wind and cold. You may be grateful that animals find protection in those trees and many other plants. You might be concerned about other people becoming interested in the wonderful world of planted, too. Be a part of planning and preserving a beautiful new outdoor center at Monrovia Elementary. If these things are important to you, and you’d be interested in becoming a Junior Master Gardener, then your activity choice should be The Garden Club! Chess ClubInformation sent: September 18; 1st meeting: September 25The chess club is a student led club open to third, fourth and fifth grade students. We have a club president, and secretary, and they conduct our meetings. The club is designed for all levels of playing from beginner to experienced players. We meet eight times a year (once a month). In the past we have competed with other schools and in tournaments, and we always have our own yearly internal tournament. Technology ClubInformation sent: October 2; 1st meeting: October 9 The technology club is a student led club, with officers. The club is designed to explore different technology. The goal is to create a product that can be shared with the school or community. In the past, we have presented workshops at ICE (Indiana Computer Educators). We have explored participating in Media Fairs. We meet eight times a year (once a month). YAC (Young Astronauts Club)Information sent: September 25; 1st meeting: October 2The Young Astronauts Club is a national club which is a spin off of NASA. It is a student lead club with officers. At the meetings, we explore space technology through discussions and projects. The Young Astronauts conduct the Rocket Launch at the end of the year. We have also been invited to attend Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama with the middle school students. We meet eight times a year (once a month).
